If you are using silicone molds, do not use a torch to pop air bubbles in the mold as this will damage the mold! If necessary, only use a torch on the resin before pouring into the mold. Keep in mind that unless a vacuum chamber is used, there will always be a few small bubbles! Here are some tips to help minimize air bubbles in your resin without damaging your silicone mold:
- warm the resin before mixing, such as by:
1) submerging the resin bottles in warm water for 10 minutes; or
2) placing the bottles in front of a space heater at low settings for 10 minutes (be careful not to place the bottles too close to the heater - keep the bottles at least 7” away from the heater)
*keep in mind that warming the resin will reduce the working time of your resin.
- mixing slowly with a plastic stirring stick (while commonly used, it is not recommended to mix with wooden craft sticks as the porous surface creates small bubbles in the resin)
- use a straw to blow the bubbles away, or use a regular BBQ lighter and do quick passes over the resin (do not stay in one place as this will overheat the resin and damage the mold)
